Our Business

Creating a New Kind of Food Company

DanoneWave was formed in April 2017, when Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods and united two companies in North America with a shared commitment to purpose, growth, and good food.

Now, as DanoneWave, we are poised to make an even greater difference in the world. We make food that delights people at any age and during any moment of the day. With our combined portfolio of beloved, trusted and pioneering brands in fresh dairy; organic dairy; plant-based; fresh foods; and coffee creamers and beverages, DanoneWave is a business unit of Danone and one of the top 15 food and beverage companies in the U.S.

And because preparing for tomorrow is the business of today, we made a bold commitment to our larger, shared purpose to change the way the world eats to benefit the health of people and the planet, by incorporating as a public benefit corporation (PBC), which makes DanoneWave the largest PBC in the U.S.

Our Past Creates a Compelling Future

Danone and WhiteWave shared a pioneering spirit—each having its own unique legacy of entrepreneurship and broader purpose, including a commitment to greater social and environmental good, from their very beginnings.

  • In 1942 as World War II engulfed Europe, our founder, Daniel Carasso, brought his family business to the United States and founded Dannon Milk Products, Inc. Dannon was the first American yogurt company, located in the Bronx, New York City. After years of tireless work, it became the first national fresh dairy brand and expanded quickly by continually bringing new types of yogurt to Americans. In 1972, our parent company, Danone, made its historic bold, dual-commitment to business success and social progress. Over the years, our company has grown its U.S. business to include Activia® , DanActive®, Danimals®, Dannon®, Danonino®, Light & Fit®, and Oikos® while also developing a robust market in Canada. Before becoming part of DanoneWave, WhiteWave built success as a purpose-driven food company. Made up of entrepreneurial brands that helped create whole new food movements in North America and Europe—most notably, organic and plant-based—the company was at the forefront of the changing ways people were choosing to eat and drink. This propelled WhiteWave to become the fastest growing food and beverage company in the U.S., while maintaining a deep commitment to transparency and responsible practices, with brands like Silk®, So Delicious®, Alpro®, Horizon®, Wallaby® Organic and International Delight.
